DWP Bank Checks and Benefit Crackdowns – What Claimants in London Need to Know
The Department for Work and Pensions has begun rolling out new Eligibility Verification measures. Banks are required to check accounts against limited indicators set by the DWP for Universal Credit, Pension Credit and ESA. Only high-level information is shared if an account matches certain criteria; the DWP says it does not see individual transactions.

Only high-level information is shared if an account matches certain criteria; the DWP says it does not see individual transactions.
At the same time, enforcement activity continues. In early August 2026 Metropolitan Police and DWP investigators carried out raids in Ealing and Harrow as part of an investigation into alleged organised benefit fraud involving false Universal Credit and PIP claims. Luxury goods were recovered.
Most genuine claimants will see no change. However, anyone with complex circumstances (self-employment, capital, living arrangements) should keep records tidy and respond promptly to any DWP contact. Incorrect information or delayed replies can still lead to suspensions or overpayment recovery. The Money and support section has links to official guidance and local advice services.
