Ealing Hospital rated Good: what changed in the CQC assessment

The CQC has raised the overall rating of Ealing Hospital and its urgent and emergency care service to Good. The report identifies specific improvements in facilities, staffing and patient information, but it does not represent a fresh assessment of every hospital service.

What does Ealing Hospital's new rating mean for patients? The Care Quality Commission, England's independent health and care regulator, has raised the overall rating of the hospital on Uxbridge Road in Southall from Requires Improvement to Good. The report was published on 21 October 2026 after an unannounced assessment on 21 and 22 July. The CQC found no breaches of regulations during this assessment.

The main change concerns urgent and emergency care. This service moved from Requires Improvement to Good. The CQC said the hospital was no longer in breach of requirements covering dignity and respect or safe care. Every category displayed in the latest urgent and emergency care report — safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led — is rated Good.

The regulator identified several practical improvements. Redevelopment of the department provided additional seating, a dedicated mental-health assessment room and new flooring. Waiting areas now display information about expected waiting times. The hospital also recruited additional staff, including a registered mental-health nurse, while staff had timely access to translation services.

Patients interviewed during the assessment were positive about the service and the care they received. Inspectors observed timely streaming and triage. Patients said they were kept informed about how long they might wait, understood their care plan and knew the next step. For someone attending the hospital, these are the most tangible elements of the report: clearer waiting-time information, an explained care pathway and a dedicated space for assessing mental-health needs.

The overall Good rating does not mean that every Ealing Hospital service was reassessed on 21 October. The latest CQC work comprised a comprehensive assessment of end-of-life care and a focused follow-up of urgent and emergency care. The new overall score combines those findings with existing ratings for the hospital's other services. Older ratings for individual areas remain visible on the CQC website, so patients checking a particular service should also note the date of its most recent inspection.

Ealing Hospital is run by London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. The trust said the improvement at Ealing formed part of a wider set of better results following inspections in July. The CQC page remains the most detailed public reference point, showing the hospital's overall rating, inspection dates and reports for individual services.

The rating is a significant positive change, but it should be read precisely. It records the regulator's judgement based on the services assessed and the ratings already in place; it is not a guarantee about an individual patient's experience or a new inspection of every department. Patients who want to comment on their care can use the feedback route linked from the CQC's Ealing Hospital page.
