Home birth service returns for families in Ealing
London North West University Healthcare has restored its planned home birth service for families in Ealing, Brent and Harrow. The new model provides round-the-clock cover, two midwives for every planned home birth and clear transfer procedures.
Families in Ealing can once again consider a planned home birth through London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. The trust announced on 23 September that the service had resumed after a temporary interruption and is operating for people across Brent, Ealing and Harrow.
The interruption followed the administration of the provider contracted to deliver the service. LNWH did not say in its announcement how long the service had been unavailable, so the notice should not be used to make assumptions about earlier bookings. The central change is that people receiving maternity care from the trust once again have a wider choice over where to give birth.
LNWH says the restored service uses a model designed to be safe and sustainable. It includes cover 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Two midwives are to attend every planned home birth. The trust also points to enhanced staff training, stronger clinical oversight and governance arrangements intended to maintain safety and quality.
Clear escalation and transfer procedures are another part of the model. In practical terms, the team has an agreed process to follow if care at home needs to move to a hospital setting. The announcement does not, however, set out detailed eligibility criteria, the route for requesting the service or when a birth plan must be agreed.
Anyone interested in a home birth should therefore discuss the option directly with their midwife or the team providing their maternity care. That conversation can provide information relevant to an individual pregnancy, rather than relying on an assumption that the service's return makes a home birth suitable or available in every case. Decisions about place of birth should be made through individual discussion with healthcare professionals.
The trust says restoring the service gives women and families more choice while maintaining high standards of safety and quality. LNWH also thanked its maternity improvement group and the staff who worked to reinstate the service.
For Ealing residents, the practical message is straightforward: planned home birth is once again among the options offered by LNWH, but personal arrangements and clinical details need to be confirmed through the person's own maternity care. The full announcement about the service's return is available on the London North West University Healthcare website.
The return is more than a restoration of the service's name. The model described by the trust sets out minimum staffing for a planned home birth and round-the-clock team availability. Families may also note that transfer arrangements form part of the service design, rather than being left to be created only if a move to hospital becomes necessary. LNWH presents these safeguards together as the basis for restarting care.
