Self-driving taxis cleared for London streets ‘later this summer’

Transport for London has begun awarding licences for self-driving taxis. Media reports indicate that autonomous vehicles, including Uber’s fleet, are expected to appear on London streets later this summer 2026.

This marks one of the most significant steps towards autonomous transport in the British capital. London is joining cities such as San Francisco, Phoenix and parts of China that are already testing or operating driverless vehicles on public roads.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions. On one side there are promises of more convenient, cheaper and more accessible transport – especially for older people, those with disabilities and residents of outer boroughs. On the other side, traditional taxi drivers, unions and some residents raise concerns about safety, job losses and unclear rules on liability in the event of an accident.

TfL has indicated that the vehicles will initially operate in limited zones under close supervision. Operators must meet strict technical and safety requirements before the fleet can be significantly expanded.

For residents across the whole of London the issue matters because it affects everyday mobility, the future of black cabs and ride-hailing services, and the longer-term shape of transport in the capital over the next five to ten years.
