The Greenford Beavers did what the council couldn't. The station has not sunk for three years

In Greenford, it was the same for years after a downpour: water flooded the streets, sandbags filled the station, and the Central Line ticket booth could turn into a wading pool. The council counted the costs of a large flood protection investment.

Meanwhile, the problem was taken over by an animal that had not been seen in London for about 400 years.

In 2023, a family of beavers was released at Paradise Fields in North Greenford. It is a former golf course, hidden between roads, shops and apartment blocks. The beavers immediately began doing what they do best: dam the water, dig canals, and build their own wetlands.

Effect? The organizers of the Ealing Beaver Project say straight: Greenford station in this sensitive place has not been flooded for three winters in a row. Water that once flowed in minutes now leaks for hours through dams and floodplains. In 2026, the family already has about eight animals and new babies have appeared.

The funniest thing about this story is that no one had to ask them to do it. The Beavers don't protect the Greenford Pendlers out of the goodness of their hearts. They build dams for themselves - to have deep water and feel safe. At the same time, they did a job for the council that was previously viewed through the prism of concrete and textures.

Paradise Fields is situated in the borough of Ealing, minutes from Greenford Broadway. You can go there and see what "engineering without tender" looks like: fallen trees, dams, puddles full of birds and a mink from which an animal emerges in the evening, looking like it escaped from a nature film, straight under the A40.

This is one of those local stories that sounds like a joke but is completely true. In west London, flooding at a station was limited not by new pipes but by beavers.
