UACS marks 55 years with photographs and memories in Acton
The United Anglo Caribbean Society is preparing a 55th-anniversary gathering in Acton. The programme will include archive photographs, members’ memories and Caribbean-inspired food, with places limited.
Would you like to learn about the history of Ealing’s Caribbean community and the people who have built a network of mutual support here for more than half a century? The United Anglo Caribbean Society is preparing a gathering to mark its 55th anniversary. It will take place on Saturday, 24 October at Acton Gardens Community Centre.
What is planned
According to Around Ealing, the event will combine a display of photographs with personal memories and Caribbean-inspired food. The material is intended to tell the story of UACS and the people who have shaped it since its early years. The gathering forms part of Black History Month, whose theme this year is Honouring our Communities.
UACS chair Cathy Simeon explained that the organisation has been collecting photographs and stories from families connected with its beginnings. The project is not limited to the anniversary display. UACS hopes the material may eventually provide the basis for a book about the organisation’s history.
The memories include accounts of people’s first experiences after arriving in Britain from the Caribbean and stories of work in hospitals and factories. Together, they are intended to show both everyday life and the contribution Caribbean residents have made locally and nationally.
How UACS works today
The organisation has adapted as residents’ needs have changed. In earlier years, it ran supplementary schools and a hostel in Southall. Today it holds activities every Tuesday and Thursday at Acton Gardens Community Centre. The programme includes exercise classes, health workshops, crafts, digital skills sessions and day trips.
Around Ealing reports that about 50 people attend activities during the week and that the organisation’s oldest member is 97. UACS also runs a Saturday drop-in twice a month at its Hanwell office. Activities there include gardening, crafts, music and conversation.
How to reserve a place
Places at the anniversary gathering on 24 October are limited, so the organisers are asking people to contact UACS in advance. The organisation’s official website lists the telephone number 020 8843 1147 and the email address Info@uacs.org.uk.
UACS describes its mission as supporting senior citizens of all cultures within the wider community, with the help of dedicated volunteers. The anniversary offers residents a chance to see archive material, speak with people connected to the organisation and understand how its role has developed over 55 years.
For anyone unable to attend, the regular Acton and Hanwell activities remain another way to learn about the organisation and take part in its community programme. Contacting UACS directly is the best way to confirm availability and practical details before travelling.
